Up and coming R&B artist B. Smyth got his start the way a lot of new musicians have these days: by uploading videos to YouTube. The Florida-based singer made waves with his impressive covers of Frank Ocean and Miguel, to name a couple, and eventually got the attention of hip hop blogs and major record labels.
Smyth went on to sign with Motown, and now his debut, "Leggo" ft. 2 Chainz is nearing 2 million views on YouTube.
Get to know the talented 19-year-old singer/dancer by discovering some of his favorite things!
Favorite dance move:
"There's one where I do a little spin and I act like I'm falling, but get back up... it's pretty cool. Or I just do the cabbage patch."
"'The Only Exception' by Paramore. It's a nice song. Haley Williams is a great vocalist."
"2 Chainz, Kanye, Kendrick Lamar, Future..."
Favorite thing about Ft. Lauderdale:
"We are as real as it gets - shout out to Lauderdale! We're not in your face but we'll let you know that what you see is what you get, basically. We're not really pretenders, you know, we don't put on a façade. What you see is what you get."
Favorite cover he's done:
"Miguel 'Sure Thing,' because it pretty much jump-started my career."
Favorite YouTube video:
"My favorite YouTube video is probably 'Smooth Criminal' by Michael Jackson. When I'm up late - because I barely get sleep - sometimes I'll be in my bed just looking at the walls. I just go to YouTube and watch that video or just watch anything."
Favorite moment with a fan:
"I have a song called 'Snap Back.' and at the end of the song I say, 'Do you want to wear my hat?' to the crowd and I throw it. I remember there was a time when I would throw my hat and nobody would care, like, 'Oh it’s just a hat on the floor.' But now I throw it and it's like, 'Oh my god let me get the hat!' They fight over it and I think that’s really cool to see how things change."
Favorite TV show:
"One of my favorite TV shows is 'That 70s Show.' It’s the bomb. After school, I think they would play it on ABC Family like two times and every time I would be home just in time to catch it. That's one of my favorite shows."
"Once I decided I was going to do music I would think about it all the time. I would dream about it. I would always have this one dream where I would get into a car, it would be a raggedy car and I would be driving, and all of a sudden it would transform into like a Ferrari and the road would transform into really bright lights and you’d see my name in the lights and now... I don’t have a Ferrari yet, but you know."
